HyperAgents — AI agents with recurrent self-improvement (Meta, 2025) — empirically demonstrated what TIT could not previously describe: a system can maximise performance metrics (syntactically valid information) without completing the task with integrity (semantic information collapse). This phenomenon, called reward hacking, is the empirical case that demanded the formalisation of three layers. Without this distinction, TIT lacks vocabulary to differentiate genuine information from ontological noise — patterns with structure but no content.
